Great question.
One of the key things we talk about during our initial chat is,
“what brings you here at this point in time?”
You might be able to answer that with absolute clarity due to a life event, a medical diagnosis or simply recognising that life needs to look different. You might equally be thinking about getting some help for the first time for exactly the same reasons. Or perhaps you’ve had some counselling through a scheme offered by your employer, or the NHS, and realised that you need more, or different, support.
You might be playing down the impact of your feelings on daily life. Or have a sense of being overwhelmed and not know where to start. All completely normal.
In my experience, having someone by your side who is genuinely interested in listening to you with compassion and respect can be a powerful first step towards change. You need a safe space to share your story and explore the feelings it brings up. We will talk, from time to time, about how our work is progressing; if we’re not a good fit, there will be a therapist out there who is.
A word about progress.
We are messy, complex beings. It takes time to make sense of our experiences and find ways to adjust how we see ourselves in the world. If change was easy, you might not be here wondering whether therapy can help you, you’d have done it already. It doesn’t happen overnight and I have no magic wand to ’fix you’ with.
My wish for you is that on the days when you feel as though you‘ve made no progress, you can turn around and see how far you’ve come.
I do understand that taking the first step towards asking for help can be the hardest. A free phone consultation costs you nothing and will help you decide if I’m the right fit for you.
Please, get in touch.
